The Zambia Union of Government and Allied Workers (UG) has called on political parties and their supporters across the country to maintain peace and avoid violence ahead of the August 13 General Elections.
UG President, Muyaywa Kabisa, has further urged political leaders to exercise control over their members and ensure that the electoral process remains peaceful.
Dr Kabisa notes that peace is a defining characteristic of Zambians and should not be compromised by political differences.
The UG President, in an interview in Lusaka today, said he is disturbed by reports of political violence in some parts of the country which are allegedly painting a negative picture of the electoral process and undermining public confidence in elections.
He said violence will not help any candidate win an election, but instead risks eroding the confidence that citizens have invested in that political party.
Dr Kabisa reminded political leaders and their supporters that violence has the potential of fueling ‘war’ like was experienced in other countries.
