The inspection figures were presented by Abdul Razak, Secretary of State for Gender and Social Action, during a meeting of the IGT’s Consultative Council in Gaza province, southern Mozambique. Razak said the findings highlighted persistent challenges in complying with labour legislation and called for stricter enforcement by the authorities. “These figures cannot be treated as mere statistics,” he said.

According to data presented at the meeting, Mozambique recorded 79 workplace accidents during the first six months of the year, resulting in injuries to more than 290 workers, including 109 women. “Of these, 136 workers suffered temporary incapacity, 54 sustained permanent partial incapacity and 106 permanent total incapacity,” Razak said. According to the General Labour Inspectorate, the mining, construction, agriculture and transport sectors continue to record the highest levels of occupational risk.

The Secretary of State also announced stronger inspection mechanisms through the introduction of an electronic labour inspection management system designed to improve the monitoring of companies and complaints. “The system will make it possible to plan inspections based on risk criteria, identify repeat offenders, monitor compliance with recommendations, manage complaints and track workplace accidents. Where there are serious violations, repeat offences or deliberate disregard for the lives and rights of workers, the law must be enforced firmly,” he said.

Razak also urged labour inspectors to uphold the highest standards of integrity and transparency in carrying out their duties. “There is no room for corruption, bribery, favouritism or any behaviour that undermines the credibility of our institution,” he said.
