Heroes Day Countdown: ZLGCA says liberation gains must empower girl child under Second Republic

HARARE — The Zimbabwe Liberated Girl Child in Action, ZLGCA, has said National Heroes Day must be used to remind the girl child of her role in defending the gains of the liberation struggle and building the nation, as the organization joins commemorations on 11 August 2026 under the theme “Honouring Our Legacy, Inspiring Our Future.” In a message welcoming the new month, ZLGCA said Heroes Day is a time to reflect on the sacrifice of brave men and women who fought for Zimbabwe’s freedom and to translate that legacy into action for the girl child. The organization listed four key reasons the girl child should celebrate and honour the day: that freedom was won by those who believed in a better future for all, that it inspires girls to dream big and become leaders in families, communities and the nation, that it calls for pride in heritage, culture and the sacrifices made for tomorrow, and that it empowers girls to be heroes in their own way through positive choices and uplifting others. ZLGCA, whose mandate is “Defending the Gains of the Liberation,” said the Second Republic led by President Emmerson Mnangagwa ‘s policies have created more opportunities for women and girls to participate in governance, business and community development.

It noted that empowering the girl child is central to sustaining the ideals of the liberation struggle and to achieving national development goals. Images shared by the organization show members taking part in commemorative activities, including laying wreaths, interacting with communities, and distributing aid, as part of efforts to instill patriotism and service. ZLGCA urged girls and women to “Know Your Past, Value Your Freedom, Shape Your Future, Be A Hero Today,” saying these principles guide its work.
