BPP Suspends Moswaane Over Presidency Bid

The Francistown West MP’s leadership ambitions now depend on a party investigation launched after he formally declared his intention to seek the BPP presidency. Francistown West MP Ignatius Moswaane has been suspended from the Botswana People’s Party (BPP) after formally declaring his intention to contest the party presidency ahead of its forthcoming elective congress. Moswaane’s suspension followed a letter to the BPP Central Committee formally expressing his interest in challenging for the presidency.

In a letter seen by The Botswana Gazette, the party confirmed receiving his correspondence dated 27 July and titled ‘Formal Declaration of Interest to Contest for the Office of the Party President’. The BPP said its Central Committee had resolved that matters arising from the letter required formal investigation to establish whether Moswaane’s conduct was consistent with the party’s constitution, code of conduct and governance processes. The suspension places Moswaane’s presidential ambitions in jeopardy as the BPP prepares for an elective congress that has yet to be scheduled.

His eligibility to contest could depend on the investigation’s outcome and the party’s interpretation of its constitutional provisions. Moswaane’s declaration came shortly after the BPP reviewed and amended its constitution, including provisions affecting eligibility for candidates seeking positions on the Central Committee. Moswaane was among four potential successors to long-serving BPP president Motlatsi Molapise.

His suspension leaves Phillip Bulawa and Mmantlha Sankoloba as the remaining potential contenders named in the emerging succession race. The development could significantly alter the leadership contest, particularly if Moswaane is prevented from participating. The suspension brings the party’s succession question back into focus as the BPP confronts the challenge of managing competing ambitions without deepening internal divisions.
