Twenty-four people were injured in two separate bakkie crashes on the N2 in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday. According to KwaZulu Private Ambulance, the first crash occurred at the N2 and R34 intersection near Empangeni, where a bakkie carrying passengers and wedding gifts from Bhukhanana to Mandlazini lost control and overturned several times. Three sustained serious injuries, including spinal trauma and fractures, while eight suffered minor injuries.
Earlier, at about 10.30am, another bakkie overturned on the N2 near Paddock on the South Coast. Thirteen people required medical attention. One patient sustained critical chest and head injuries, nine suffered serious injuries and three sustained minor injuries.
Both scenes required temporary lane closures as emergency teams stabilised and transported the injured to various hospitals. SAPS and the Fire Department assisted at both scenes.
