RECENT inspections by authorities in the health sector have established that there has been an increase in unregistered facilities selling prescription drugs. These medicines include those used to manage conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. Several “bogus” medical practitioners have been arrested after some people sought cheaper ‘medication’ from them.

The Health Professions Authority (HPA) and the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) have begun enhanced surveillance and inspections targeting unlicensed health facilities. The exercise is also targeting the illicit distribution of prescription drugs and unqualified individuals working in the health sector. MCAZ Director-General, Richard Rukwata, warned that offenders will be prosecuted and will face the full force of the law.

He urged the public to seek medical care and pharmaceutical services only from registered health professionals. Rukwata said legitimate healthcare providers can be identified by the visible display of: A valid practising certificate from the relevant Council. A valid HPA premise registration certificate for institutional registration.
