Eastern Province Minister, Peter Phiri, has called for a non-selective approach in the implementation of the revised Cash-for-Work programme. Mr Phiri, who is also the United Party for National Development (UPND) Eastern Province chairperson, stated that the Cash-for-Work programme is a government initiative meant to benefit all eligible citizens regardless of their political affiliation. He said this during his visit to Lumezi district where he received about 800 defectors, among them four councillors.
Three of the four councillors came from the opposition Patriotic Front (PF) while one is from the National Restoration Party (NRP). He said the revised Cash-for-Work programme is not a political undertaking but a national programme designed to support vulnerable citizens across the country. Mr Phiri further explained that the revised programme has addressed challenges that were previously experienced, including the repeated recruitment of the same individuals and members of the same family at the expense of other equally deserving citizens.“The Cash-for-Work programme is for everyone who meets the criteria.
All these people here have a right to participate in the programme and must be recruited as long as they are eligible. The programme has changed, it is not like in the past where one individual would decide who to include and who not to include,” he said.Meanwhile, Mr Phiri said President Hakainde Hichilema has demonstrated strong commitment to developing the country through various interventions such as the free education policy and the school feeding programme. He noted that President Hichilema’s directive to ensure that no child sits on the floor while accessing education is being actualised through ongoing infrastructure and desk provision programmes in schools.Mr Phiri further projected that Lumezi district is poised for accelerated development following the delimitation exercise which resulted in the creation of two constituencies namely Lumezi North and Lumezi South.“The development means the district will now benefit from dual allocations under the expanded Constituency Development Fund (CDF), which currently stands at K40 million per constituency,” he said. Mr Phiri further explained that the revised programme has addressed challenges that were previously experienced, including the repeated recruitment of the same individuals and members of the same family at the expense of other equally deserving citizens.
