Story by Kudzai GumboPRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has reaffirmed Zimbabwe’s commitment to working with all United Nations Member States, noting the need for peaceful coexistance among nations.He was addressing the United Nations General Assembly in New York in a speech read on his behalf by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Professor Amon Murwira, on Friday evening.The establishment of the United Nations was aimed at conflict resolution and ending wars which were threatening global peace and security.In his address, he noted the need for the United Nations to revisit it’s founding principles and values to ensure the interests of developing nations receive the much needed attention.“We welcome the Secretary Generals UN 80 initiative on reforming the UN. The reform must allow the organisation to evolve in line with contemporary realities, while strengthening and not diminishing the voice and participation of developing countries. Any reform that sidelines the aspirations of the global South runs contrary to the very spirit of the UN Charter.

For the UN to remain legitimate, effective, and responsive, it’s reforms must be member state driven, inclusive and enchored in the principle of of sovereign equality of all member states,” he said.The Head of State also took the opportunity to inform the world about comprehensive reforms and investments being pursued to improve livelihoods of its citizenry.“Reforms to our critical economic sectors including agriculture, mining, tourism and manufacturing have resulted in significant levels of investment changing the lives and livelihoods of our people,” he added.The 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly once again presented a platform for member states to come together and shape the future of generations to come.
