Parliament suspends NCC leader Fadiel Adams

National Coloured Congress (NCC) leader andMember of Parliament (MP) Fadiel Adamshas been suspended from Parliament under thePowers, Privileges and Immunities of Parliament and Provincial Legislatures Act, following allegations that his conduct brought the institution into disrepute. The suspension emerged on Wednesday during a meeting of Parliament’s Impeachment Committee, where members voted to appoint Advocate Thandazani Madonsela SC as the committee’s evidence leader. Chairperson Magashule Gana announced the appointment after the majority backed Madonsela.

Adams was absent from the meeting, with committee members informed that he had already been suspended. His suspension is expected to remain in effect until later this month. The charges stem from allegations that he misrepresented his status and conducted unauthorised interviews with awaiting-trial inmates at Westville Prisonduring inquiries linked to the 2017 murder of ANC Youth League leader Sindiso Magaqa.

Adams is also scheduled to appear before the Madlanga Commission on August 11, spokesperson Jeremy Michaels confirmed last week. The commission is expected to questionAdams about his possession and circulation of sensitive Crime Intelligence documents, which he maintains were anonymously delivered to his parliamentary office. It is also expected to examine issues surrounding the Section 27 affidavit used in investigations involving senior Crime Intelligence (CI) officials.
