Zambia launches National Carbon Registry to advance international carbon trading

Zambia has launched its National Carbon Registry, becoming one of the first countries in the world to deploy a fully integrated, sovereign digital infrastructure for carbon asset management. The launch follows years of preparatory work under the SPAR6C Program, funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety through the International Climate Initiative The platform was unveiled in Lusaka on Friday by the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment and the Zambia Environmental Management Agency, with support from the Supporting Preparedness for Article 6 Cooperation (SPAR6C) Program. The SPAR6C program supported Zambia to establish the regulatory and institutional frameworks required to participate in international carbon markets.

Douty Chibamba, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Green Economy and Environment said the pioneering system positions Zambia at the forefront of global climate finance by ensuring transparency, environmental integrity, and strict compliance with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. “Zambia’s Carbon Registry is fully online, demonstrating our integrity and strong commitment to accountability and transparency,” Chibamba said. He stated that the government would ensure that all activities conform to the provisions of Zambia’s Green Economy and Climate Change Act and the Paris Agreement, and that actions related to our carbon credits were visible and can be reviewed by members of the public.
