Authorities have closed the R617 in KwaZulu-Natal. Snow chasers are prohibited and motorists are requested to delay their trips. South Africa is bracing for a week of disruptive weather, as snowfall, dangerous winds and severe storms are expected to affect large parts of the country.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has predicted very cold conditions across most of the country, with disruptive snowfall expected in parts of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. Severe thunderstorms are also possible over parts of Gauteng, the Free State, North West and the eastern interior, with localised flooding, hail and damaging winds among the potential impacts. KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma said he had deployed a roving human settlements team to work with the municipality and assist communities in distress. Several roads in KwaZulu-Natal have been closed due to heavy snowfall, including the R617 near Kokstad, with traffic diverted to the R56.
