Stock farmers in Pietermaritzburg have blown the whistle on what they claim is a thriving underground market for stolen livestock, with some local shisanyama outlets accused of driving demand. The Vimbani Bafana Smero association, representing farmers in Edendale and surrounding areas, says stock theft has reached crisis levels, leaving small-scale farmers struggling to survive. Chairperson Thulani Sithole said the situation has become unbearable.
I started farming after I lost my job in 2016. It was my only way to make a living. I bought two female goats, but when they started having kids, they were stolen from me.
He said farmers are convinced that stolen livestock is being funnelled into local businesses. Our cows are slaughtered and sold to butchers and certain venues around the CBD and across uMgungundlovu,” he said. He warned that unless those buying stolen meat are held accountable, the cycle of theft will continue unchecked.

The association was recently formalised after engagements with law enforcement, as farmers push for urgent intervention and stronger co-ordination. Secretary Siyabonga Masikane raised additional concerns, alleging that some traditional healers are also linked to the theft of goats.
