A prominent March and March member made his second appearance in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, on charges of robbery, intimidation and attempted murder. Advocate Rasta Nhlangulela (41) was arrested last month following a complaint linked to a March and March protest. His bail application was postponed to Friday while the court verifies his place of residence.
Nhlangulela remains in custody pending the outcome of his bail application. He faces several charges, including robbery, intimidation and attempted murder. The postponement sparked strong reactions from March and March supporters, who filled the public gallery and gathered outside the court in a show of solidarity with Nhlangulela.
Speaking toThe Witness, members of the movement claimed the case against Nhlangulela was politically motivated and aimed at weakening the organisation. March and March uMgungundlovu leader Mxolisi Nxumalo said the organisation would continue to stand behind Nhlangulela throughout the legal process. “We will stand in solidarity with Advocate Rasta Nhlangulela because we believe he has been framed for something he did not do,” said Nxumalo.

He added: “The arrest of Nhlangulela is politically motivated.” Nhlangulela’s arrest follows heightened tensions surrounding the March and March movement, which has in recent months organised demonstrations and campaigns targeting undocumented immigrants and foreign-owned businesses in parts of KwaZulu-Natal. The movement’s activities have attracted both public support and criticism.
