Voter education gains momentum in Chinsali

Mafinga District Election Officer (DEO) Joseph Nonde says Voter Education has continued to gain momentum in all the wards of Mafinga South and North Constituencies as voting day draws closer. Speaking in a telephone interview this morning with the media in Chinsali, Mr. Nonde described the voter education so far facilitation as a success.

He said the Voter Education Facilitators have performed extremely well, owing to the fact that the district has no community radio station and lacks a radio signal from the national broadcaster, ZNBC. Mr Nonde pointed out that the VEFs are utilizing community engagements such as community gatherings, functions, and roadshows, coupled with door-to-door sensitizations to ensure that the right information reaches the general public. “We are also taking advantage of church gatherings, public meetings, and open markets which are held in all the wards every week,” he said.

The DEO said the program is on course in terms of meeting targets to ensure that every electorate is sensitized on what is expected of them before, during, and after the election, despite communication challenges in some instances. He added that the district has continued to maintain a peaceful atmosphere throughout the campaigns, stating that no violence has been recorded. The DEO, however, said the district has witnessed clashes between political parties due to a failure to adhere to the campaign timetable, which was resolved amicably between the parties involved.Mr Nonde attributes the peace prevailing in the district to the successful implementation of voter education by the VEFs.The DEO has since commended the VEFs for the job they are doing in sensitizing electorates across communities.He said the Commission’s activities, such as the liaison meetings for political parties where parameters, expectations, and zones were set, have helped in fostering peace and peaceful campaigns among political players.“So far, this is what has helped us to maintain peace, and I wish to commend political parties for upholding peace since the campaigns started.

As a district, we are happy that Mafinga is violence-free,” he said.Mr Nonde further disclosed that the district is ready for the forthcoming polls next month, adding that currently, the Commission is sorting out applications for polling staff in readiness for the national exercise on August 13th, 2026.He said by next week, the selection of ECZ polling staff will be underway, as human capital is a major milestone in the election process.The DEO all activities leading to the successful implementation of the electoral process have been done in line with the Commission’s guidelines.
