Top-flight league teams start pre-season preps

Most of the FDH Bank Premiership teams are set to start their 2026/27 pre-season preparations this week following Football Association of Malawi’s (FAM) announcement that the flagship league will kick off on April 25. Champions Mighty Wanderers announced through their Facebook page that they started with medical tests on Friday and will switch to physical fitness sessions this week before shifting to ball work. The only new signing in the Nomads camp so far is striker Lameck Mithi from Mzuzu-based Moyale Barracks FC, who is on a three-year deal.

Lilongwe-based Silver Strikers chief executive officer (CEO) Patrick Chimimba said in an interview that the Bankers will regroup today. “Last month we regrouped briefly just for the international friendlies against Zimbabwean club Caps United, but now we are going full throttle,” he said. In the other hand, Civil Service United kick-start their 2026/27 season preparations tomorrow.

“The club will not conduct trials this time around as it will maintain the bulk of the squad from last season alongside the new players who have already joined the team ahead of the upcoming campaign,” reads the statement. Ekhaya FC of Blantyre also regroup tomorrow while Karonga United assembled last week. Blue Eagles are also scheduled to regroup this week.

Ekhya, aka The Cowboys, started with a pre-season talent identification exercise that run from March 4 to 6. Moyale will resume training today at Mzuzu Government Secondary School. Chitipa United also start their preparations today and their coach Kondwa Ikwanga said he hs great hopes for the new season. “Our plans are that we bring out to a very formidable and competitive youth team,” he said .
