Today’s weather: Western Cape braces for rough seas and gusty winds as rain spreads east

Strong coastal winds and rain to batter Southern provinces on Monday. South Africans can expect a chilly start to the new week as a cold weather system brings rain, showers and gusty conditions to parts of the country on Monday, July 27, 2026. According to the South African Weather Service, most of the country will remain fine and cool, but conditions will turn partly cloudy and cold across southern regions.

Isolated to scattered rain and showers are expected along the southern coastline, stretching from the Western Cape through parts of the Eastern Cape and into southern KwaZulu-Natal. Rainfall probabilities of 30% are forecast for parts of the south-western Cape, the southern interior around Beaufort West and Graaff-Reinet, and along sections of the Wild Coast and southern KwaZulu-Natal coast. Higher rainfall chances of 60% are expected along the south coast, particularly from the Garden Route eastwards toward the Eastern Cape coastline.

Strong winds are set to be the main weather concern. Windy conditions are expected over the extreme western interior and along the southwestern coastline of the Western Cape. A Yellow Level 1 warning for damaging coastal winds and waves has been issued for the Cape Columbine and Cape Agulhas coastline from Monday afternoon into Tuesday.

Forecasters warn that southerly to south-easterly winds of 40km/h to 60km/h, with gusts reaching 70km/h to 80km/h, could make navigation difficult for small vessels and personal watercraft. Wave heights are expected to build to between four and five metres, creating hazardous sea conditions and possible disruptions to beach and harbour activities. Temperatures are expected to remain cool to cold across the southern parts of the country, while the central and northern interior will experience largely dry weather with no significant rainfall expected. Residents in coastal areas are urged to exercise caution near the shoreline, while mariners and anglers are advised to monitor weather updates as rough sea conditions develop along the Western Cape coast.
