68,000 migrants processed so far as Musina repatriation centre scales down

The Musina facility’s capacity will be reduced as government shifts its focus towards ongoing border management and enforcement operations. TheMusina Temporary Repatriation Processing Centrewill be scaled down from a capacity of 20,000 people to 1,500 from August 1 after more than 68,000 foreign nationals were processed as part of intensified migration management operations. The announcement was made on Sunday by Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi, who was briefing the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) on Migration.

Kubayi said the decision followed an assessment of migration trends over the past three weeks and formed part of government’sFive-Point Planaimed at strengthening migration management, border security and law enforcement. Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Mmamoloko Kubayi addresses the media regarding the scaling down of the Musina Temporary Repatriation Processing Centre and the government’s ongoing efforts in migration management TheBorder Management Authority(BMA) has also processed 72,906 repatriations through ports of entry between June 7 and July 14, involving various nationalities, including Malawian, Zimbabwean and Mozambican nationals. Kubayi said the reduction in the centre’s capacity would not affect government’s ability to continue supporting repatriation efforts.
