On October 31, 1983, Takunda Mafika was born in Zimbabwe. He was a renowned musician and teacher who played the Mbira, a traditional African instrument particularly symbolic among the Shona people. Mafika was notable for his dedication to teaching the Mbira both locally in Zimbabwe and internationally, conducting workshops and performances in Europe and Africa.
Takunda Mafika founded the band Tru Bantu and released the album “Dzimwe Nguva,” which gained local and international acclaim. Throughout his career, he collaborated with prominent Zimbabwean artists such as Willom Tight, Chiwoniso, Alexio, Mafriq, and the late Sam Mtukudzi. Beyond his musicianship, Mafika was deeply invested in social activism; his music addressed democracy, freedom, and peaceful development in Zimbabwe. He also worked as a UNESCO Schools coordinator focused on sustainable development education and was involved with international youth and cultural programs.
Sadly, Mafika passed away at a young age on October 12, 2011, following complications from a stroke. His legacy remains influential in Zimbabwean music and activism, remembered for his passion for both cultural heritage through the Mbira and his commitment to societal progress through his art.
