Midlands Wanderers, the only local football team campaigning in the Motsepe Foundation Championship (National First Division), are under pressure to avoid the dreaded relegation axe. “Abafana Bebatha” founder and head coach Vincent “Masenti” Myeni has on many occasions told The Witness that the Motsepe Foundation Championship (NFD) is one of the toughest leagues in South African soccer and his outfit — placed No. 14 on the log — have found it difficult to settle, adding that they always knew it would take them a while to get used to the NFD.

Coming from a provincial-based league like KZN’s Vincent “Masenti” Myeni was always going to be a challenge and we knew about it. “Our players are still young and originally from our development structures, so we were also aware that it won’t just be easy for them to quickly adapt. So, yes our taking off or starting in the NFD was very difficult and all the fixtures are tough.

“Our main aim and maybe the only target this season is to survive relegation in order to be in the NFD again next season,” the coach said. Supporters from around Pietermaritzburg and the entire uMgungundlovu District will have a chance to see Abafana Bebatha in action on Saturday against fifth-placed Castric Stars at Hammarsdale’s Mpumalanga Stadium. Kick-off is at 3pm. Fans are urged to check the Wanderer’s website and Facebook page for recent updates about transport arrangements.
