Several killed in head-on crash on N2

At least six people were killed in a fiery head-on collision on the N2 outside KuGompo City in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday, as heavy rain and hazardous road conditions continued to batter the province. The crash occurred in Mooiplaas, where a sedan caught fire following the impact, trapping some of its occupants inside the burning vehicle. Eastern Cape Department of Transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose said emergency and rapid response teams were at the scene, but details surrounding the cause of the collision remained unclear.

“The sedan burst into flames after the crash, with some occupants reportedly trapped in the inferno,” said Binqose. The fatal collision comes as persistent rain has created dangerous driving conditions across the province. Binqose warned motorists that wet and slippery roads, poor visibility and the possibility of black ice in high-lying areas had significantly increased the risk of serious crashes. The department urged road users to exercise extreme caution by reducing speed, increasing following distances, switching on headlights and avoiding unnecessary travel in areas where conditions remain particularly hazardous.
