Mozambique: Roads hamper banana transport

According to the Association of Banana-Producing Companies of Mozambique (Banana-Moz), the situation has been increasing companies’ operating costs, affecting the final price of the product and the sector’s competitiveness in both external and domestic markets. Poor road conditions make it difficult to transport the produce efficiently, increasing travel times, vehicle wear and maintenance costs. In addition, the roads are affecting the quality of transported bananas, which is considered critical for a product that is sensitive to handling.

The association says that impacts occur during the journey, particularly along the worst sections, causing blemishes on the bananas. These defects significantly reduce their commercial value, particularly in the demanding South African market. According to Banana-Moz Vice-President Arnaldo Ribeiro, the main problem is on the sections between Boane-Goba and Boane-Namaacha.

“From Boane to the production areas, traffic is relatively stable, but after this section the roads are in poor condition and this is compromising our logistics chain,” he said. Although he acknowledges that the authorities have carried out repairs, Ribeiro believes they have not been durable. “The potholes are filled, but they reappear shortly afterwards.

This creates a constant cycle of difficulties that affects companies’ efficiency and product quality,” he added. Last year, these companies generated more than US$40 million in revenue.
