Mozambique | Manica Business Council pleased with Government mining suspension

The Manica Provincial Business Council states that the suspension of mining activities is delivering positive results. Ten months after the Government’s decision, water in the Chicamba Reservoir is once again showing lower turbidity levels—a clear sign that water quality is improving. The President of the Manica Provincial Business Council says entrepreneurs in the tourism, agriculture, and fisheries sectors are pleased with the reduction of river pollution, at a time when several companies have resumed operations under strict compliance with environmental protection standards.

Alcides Cintura considers this improvement proof that mineral resources can be exploited without damaging the environment. The business leader believes that the new Mining Law will strengthen oversight of mining activities, reduce river pollution, and ensure more responsible resource extraction. “I believe the National Mining Company (Empresa Nacional de Minas – EMEM) will participate across all exploration chains and hold a 15% state interest in the mining licenses of any operator.

This will ensure that this ongoing river pollution does not continue. We congratulate the Government of Mozambique, the provincial government, and the teams involved. From here, we must maintain this momentum so as not to harm local communities or business enterprise,” said the President of the Manica Business Council. Alcides Cintura further advocated for the continuation of mining license suspension measures where necessary to protect the environment.
