Mbare Mourns Prominent Zimdancehall DJ, DJ Jedza

To many, DJ Jedza was more than just a DJ , he was one of their own. Born on 5 February 1993, Gerald grew up in Mbare at a time when Zimdancehall was beginning to establish itself in Zimbabwe. He developed a passion for DJing at a young age, driven by dreams that stretched far beyond his neighbourhood.

Over the years, his talent saw him share studios and stages with some of Zimbabwe’s biggest Zimdancehall artists, including Killer T, Sir Calaz, Kinnah, Ras Pompy and Tiyps Mabhanditi, among many others. Despite his growing success, he never forgot his roots and remained deeply connected to Mbare. Those who worked with him say his generosity and willingness to uplift others set him apart.

DJ Fresh, who grew up with Gerald in Matapi, described him as both a mentor and role model. “I looked up to him from the day I joined the industry. He always spoke about discipline.

He would say, ‘The music industry will break you if you don’t take it seriously.’ He helped me discover my talent by believing in me and giving me opportunities.” At the family home in Matapi Block 3, mourners have begun gathering to pay their respects. Speaking on behalf of the family, Gerald’s sister, Grace Papiro, said his death has left an irreplaceable void. “As a family, we have lost a brother, a friend and a father.

Gerald loved everyone,not only his family but the entire community. He was always present at family gatherings and never hesitated to help others.” She added that funeral arrangements will be announced once relatives travelling from the diaspora have arrived.
