As a concerned resident and ratepayer, I wish to express my deep concern regarding the deteriorating state of Pietermaritzburg, the capital city of KwaZulu-Natal. The ongoing waste management disruptions have highlighted a problem that has been building for years — the decline of cleanliness, maintenance and service delivery in our city. Pietermaritzburg should be a city that residents are proud to call home and visitors are eager to explore.

Instead, many streets, public spaces and business districts are increasingly affected by uncollected refuse, illegal dumping, overgrown verges and neglected infrastructure. The waste strike has only intensified these challenges, creating health risks, unpleasant living conditions and damage to the city’s reputation. Businesses are struggling to attract customers to areas where waste accumulates, while residents are forced to endure unsanitary conditions despite paying rates and taxes.

A dirty city discourages investment, tourism and economic growth. It sends the message that basic municipal responsibilities are not being prioritised. The municipality must act urgently to restore regular waste collection services and implement a comprehensive city-wide clean-up campaign.
