KwaZulu-Natal motorists will have a limited opportunity to purchase four-digit personalised vehicle licence numbers for R2 000 this month. MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma announced that the numbers will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis at designated venues in Pietermaritzburg and Durban. Sales will take place on June 9 at the Choice Numbers offices in Pietermaritzburg and on June 18 at the Umbilo Provincial Registering Authority in Durban.

The offer is restricted to motorists residing in the two cities. Duma described the sale as a rare opportunity, noting that only a limited number of four-digit personalised licence numbers are available. Each motorist will be allowed to purchase only one number.

To prevent disputes, buyers will be required to apply in person and must present proof of address and a copy of their identity document. Application forms will be provided at the venues. The department is also exploring the availability of additional four-digit numbers for motorists in Empangeni and Ladysmith.

“Only the MEC for Transport may establish a personalised licence number system in the province,” he said. He added that the function has been delegated to the Motor Transport Service’s Choice Numbers Section, which remains the only authorised body to sell personalised licence numbers in KwaZulu-Natal.
