Idris Elba knighted for services to young people

Actor Idris Elba has been awarded a knighthood in recognition of his services to young people, capping a distinguished career both on and off screen. The 53-year-old star, best known for his acclaimed roles in The Wire and Luther, was named in the New Year Honours list. According toBBC, the honour acknowledges not only his contribution to the entertainment industry but also his commitment to youth development and community empowerment.

In 2022, Sir Idris established the Elba Hope Foundation, an organisation dedicated to advancing education, youth advocacy, sustainable development and community empowerment initiatives. His passion for supporting young people is rooted in his own experiences. At the age of 18, he received financial assistance from the Prince’s Trust, now known as the King’s Trust, which enabled him to attend the National Youth Music Theatre and pursue his acting ambitions.

Sir Idris is also set to collaborate with King Charles III on a documentary marking 50 years since the monarch founded the charity. The programme is expected to air on Netflix later this year. The honours list also recognised legendary ice dancers Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, who were awarded a damehood and knighthood respectively for their services to ice skating and voluntary work.

The pair captured global attention when they won Olympic gold at the 1984 Winter Games with their iconic Bolero routine and later became household names through ITV’s Dancing On Ice. Speaking after receiving the honour, Dame Jayne Torvill said the recognition was a fitting conclusion to their skating careers following their final performance together last year. “We had such a great time and were so happy with the tour.

Receiving this award after marking our retirement feels like the perfect ending,” she said. Beyond their sporting achievements, both have devoted significant time to charitable and mentoring roles. Dame Jayne has served as a celebrity ambassador for a children’s hospice in south-east England for more than two decades, while Sir Christopher has worked as a coach and mentor with the British Ice Skating Academy of Dance. Actress and comedian Meera Syal was also honoured with a damehood for her services to literature, drama and charity.
