What started as an attempt to replace a stolen coffee machine has brewed into a national show of support for a police officer whose testimony before the Madlanga Commission has struck a chord with South Africans. A crowdfunding campaign launched for Hawks investigator Warrant Officer Karl Sanders has raised more than R500 000, with donations continuing to climb as members of the public rally behind an officer many have come to view as a symbol of integrity and perseverance in the fight against crime and corruption. The fundraiser was started after Sanders revealed during his testimony at the commission that his office coffee machine had been stolen.
At the time, he was giving evidence relating to the theft of more than 500kg of cocaine, valued at an estimated R200 million, from the Hawks office in Port Shepstone in 2021. While the stolen appliance initially sparked the fundraising effort, donors quickly turned the campaign into something much bigger. For many contributors, it became an opportunity to recognise an investigator who has continued pursuing high-profile criminal cases despite the challenges and setbacks highlighted during the commission’s proceedings.
According to IOL, campaign organiser Kyle van Reenen said it was still too early to determine exactly how the money would be used because donations were continuing to increase. “Given the continued increase in donations, it would be premature to make any definitive decisions regarding the utilisation of the funds at this stage,” he said. Van Reenen said discussions with Sanders would take place once the campaign concludes and that any decision would be made in line with SAPS policies and regulations governing donations and gifts.
