Three Durban Hawks members have reportedly been suspended, while two others are believed to have been served with letters of intention to suspend. The Witnessunderstands that one or more of the affected members have either testified or are expected to testify before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. It has also been reported that the suspensions may be linked to investigations surrounding a drug bust and the alleged theft of drugs from the Port Shepstone police depot.

However, Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale neither confirmed nor denied the reported suspensions when approached for comment. Mogale described the matter as one involving an employer-employee relationship and said it was being handled in accordance with applicable labour laws, policies and internal processes. “As this is an internal human resources matter, we request that the organisation be afforded the opportunity to deal with it through the prescribed channels,” she said.

It would therefore be inappropriate to comment further at this stage. When asked directly to confirm if the suspensions had taken place, Mogale again declined to provide confirmation, saying the Hawks would only issue a detailed statement once all internal processes had been concluded. “That you hear about this in the corridors does not mean we can confirm it.
