A 42‑year‑old man from Beitbridge has been convicted and sentenced to 18 years in prison for raping his 9‑year‑old neighbour, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) has confirmed.According to the NPAZ bulletin released today, the offence occurred on 12 July 2025 at around 2000 hours. The child was playing with other children at her homestead while her grandmother was asleep.The offender arrived, grabbed the girl by the hand and dragged her into a nearby bush, covering her mouth to stop her from screaming. The assault was interrupted when the child heard people calling her name.She managed to return home and immediately told her grandmother what had happened.

A police report was filed, leading to the suspect’s arrest.Following investigations and trial, the Beitbridge Regional Court found the man guilty and imposed an 18‑year custodial sentence.In its statement, the NPAZ condemned the offender’s actions as “a serious violation of the child’s rights and the law”. The Authority urged communities to remain vigilant and to report all cases of abuse to ensure perpetrators are brought to justice and children are protected.
