All eyes will be on the rugby field today as Michaelhouse and Hilton College collide in one of school rugby’s most anticipated derby clashes. With 210 meetings since 1904, the rivalry remains finely balanced — Michaelhouse with 101 wins, Hilton with 99, and 10 draws — adding even more weight to this weekend’s encounter. “Few rivalries have quite captured the imagination quite like the derby day clash with Hilton College,” said Michaelhouse head of admissions and marketing Murray Witherspoon.
“The weight of history gives so much to the occasion which cannot be manufactured or fast-tracked.” That history is matched by a build-up that grips both schools. “One can feel a palpable shift in the energy around the school from the Monday ahead of the fixture,” Witherspoon said. Hilton College director of sport Burger Nel said the clash remains special for both communities.
“It’s a very meaningful event. There is a strong sense of collegiality between the two school communities, and derby day provides a wonderful opportunity to connect and build on longstanding friendships.” A packed crowd and charged atmosphere are expected, with supporters from both schools turning out in force. “Players, parents, Old Boys and supporters of both schools can expect a day of fierce but friendly rivalry,” said Witherspoon.
