Two killed after being ejected from vehicle in crash near Howick

Two people were killed after being ejected from their vehicle in a crash on the R617 near Howick on Monday morning, as sleet and snow affected conditions in the area. Midlands EMS Howick crews were dispatched to the scene on the R617, just past Mphophomeni, following reports of a motor vehicle accident.

Upon arrival, emergency services found a single vehicle involved in the crash, with two occupants having been ejected. The two patients, unfortunately, showed no signs of life after sustaining severe injuries. They were assessed by emergency medical personnel and declared dead at the scene.

Authorities say the exact circumstances surrounding the crash are not known and will be investigated. However, responders did note that there were signs of sleet and snow in the area at the time of the crash. Motorists have been warned to exercise caution on the roads, with inclement weather contributing to reduced visibility and potentially slippery road surfaces. Motorists should reduce their speed, increase their following distance, switch on their headlights and avoid sudden braking or harsh steering movements.
