Prosecutor Drushantha Ramsamy accused her former boss, Advocate Andrea Johnson, of lying at the Madlanga Commission. Despite describing it as a “meet and greet”, the Madlanga Commission heard that formerInvestigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) head Advocate Andrea Johnsonmet with then Police Minister Senzo Mchunu at his private residence on January 20. The commission was told on Wednesday that the meeting took place under private circumstances, with Johnson’s cellphones left with her protectors before she entered the residence.

State prosecutor Drushantha Ramsamy said Johnson waited with Cedric Nkabinde (Mchunu’s chief of staff) before meeting Mchunu and later indicated that the interaction had made her uncomfortable, claiming Nkabinde had “given her the heebie-jeebies.” Ramsamy further told the inquiry that Mchunu had expressed a desire to clean up the South African Police Service (SAPS), particularly the Crime Intelligence division. Johnson, however, maintained that the discussion was only a casual introduction and insisted that the controversial Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) was not raised during the meeting. During her testimony, Johnson initially appeared to suggest that she had no previous meeting with Mchunu, but later acknowledged the encounter.

She told the commission that she had informed Mchunu not to call her to meetings because she reported to the Justice Minister, not the Police Minister. The inquiry also heard about another meeting involving Johnson and former Hawks head Lieutenant-General Godfrey Lebeya. Johnson said she could not remember all the details of her conversation with Mchunu but remained firm that PKTT matters were not discussed. Mchunu has appeared before the commission and denied allegations made against him.
