Malawi Queens yesterday went down 73-38 to England’s Roses to register a second defeat in three Group A matches at the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games underway in Scotland.
The 35-basket loss is the World Netball ninth-ranked Malawi National Netball Team’s heaviest to the Roses in their last 10 conventional netball meetings.
In a match monitored on SuperSport TV, the Queens’ defeat to the third-ranked England comes ahead of their fixture against top-ranked Australia tonight.
“England came hard on us. We didn’t play the way we were told,” said Queens’ wing attacker Takondwa Lwazi in a post-match interview. “We will rectify our mistakes as we face Australia tomorrow [today].”
In yesterday’s match the Queens trailed 18-9 in the first quarter before lagging behind 37-23 at half-time.
They continued to be
on the back-foot in the third quarter which ended 18-10 and a flurry of unforced errors proved fatal.
Australia-based shooter Mwawi Kumwenda-M’bwana and goal-attacker Ethel Ng’ambi tried their best to pressurise England’s taller defenders under the loop, but too much passes before aiming for a goal proved a setback for the Queens.
Lwazi’s long-range passes, centre Mphatso Banda’s creativity and wing defender Martha Dambo’s spirited fight could hardly crack their taller opponents.
Goal defender Sophie Banda and goalkeeper Shabel Bengo also gave out something extra, but the Roses proved too hot to handle.
Queens’ expatriate coach Debbie Fuller hopes the Queens will be a changed side and up their game in tonight’s match.
Currently, Queens are fourth in their group with two points from three games while England are third with four points. Reigning champions Australia and South Africa occupy first and second positions with a tie on four points from two straight wins apiece.
