Man commits suicide in Mambwe

A 42-year-old man of Mambwe District in Eastern province has committed suicide by taking maize preservative tablets. Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba has identified the deceased as David Phiri, who served as an internal auditor at Chadiza Town Council. Mr Mweemba said that the motive for the suicide is not known.

However, unverified reports suggest that the deceased defiled a 15-year-old housemaid in Chadiza District.“Brief facts of the matter are that the deceased was on Leave from work and had travelled to Mambwe from Chadiza to work on his plot in Jumbe Village while lodging at the Mambwe Town Council Guest House.On July 25th, 2026, the deceased was seen drinking alcohol and playing pool with friends at a bar within the Central Business district, afterwards, he parted ways with his friends,” he explained.“At around 02 hours, on the morning of 26th July 2026, nearby residents heard someone screaming from the direction of the deceased’s plot but did not go to check.At 07:00hours, passers-by discovered the deceased lying motionless at his plot and immediately informed the police,” Mr Mweemba added.Mr Mweemba said police officers visited the scene where the deceased was identified by relatives, adding that a physical inspection of the body showed no visible injuries.“A strong chemical smell was emanating from the body and particles suspected to be from the maize preservative tablets were found near the body together with a bottle of whiskey,” he detailed.He said that the body of the deceased was deposited into Mambwe District Hospital Mortuary awaiting burial as no foul play was suspected.
