The body of 54-year-old Tony Govender was recovered from Hazelmere Dam on Tuesday morning following a five-day search operation. Prem Balram, spokesperson for Reaction Unit South Africa, the recovery effort, led by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Metro Police Search and Rescue units, began on Friday and continued until Govender’s body was located. “His family remained on the banks of the Hazelmere Dam in KZN.
during the recovery operation.” Govender is believed to have drowned while swimming out to retrieve a drifting jet ski. He had been at the dam with friends celebrating his 54th birthday when the incident occurred. Rusa initially deployed a helicopter in an attempt to rescue Govender before it was confirmed that he had drowned.
At the request of his family, the helicopter was redeployed on Saturday afternoon to assist with an aerial search of the area. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
