A doctor from Madadeni near Newcastle in KZN accused of sexually assaulting four female patients between September 2025 and April 2026 was granted R15 000 bail in the Madadeni Magistrate’s Court this morning. Newcastle Advertiserreportsthe 66-year-old man was arrested on April 28 after a ‘whistleblower’ allegedly informed police about the offences while the surgeon was employed at Madadeni Regional Hospital. It is alleged that he inappropriately touched patients’ breasts and other private parts and, in some cases, forced them to perform sexual acts while under his care.
He first appeared in court last Thursday (April 30) for bail information purposes. During the official bail hearing this morning, state prosecutor Thulisile Shabalala confirmed that the state would not oppose bail. She said the state believed the former surgeon was unlikely to tamper with witnesses, was not considered a flight risk, and that his release would not result in public unrest.
Shabalala and defence attorney Allen Kelly both read statements into the court record before delivering their closing arguments. Following a brief adjournment, presiding officer Magistrate Nkosi delivered judgment and granted the accused bail of R15 000. Nkosi said the accused must report to Newcastle Police Station every Monday and Friday between 06:00 and 18:00.
