The local outfit representing the entire uMgungundlovu District in the highly competitive Motsepe Foundation Championship (National First Division), Midlands Wanderers, seem to be slowly coming right and are likely to avoid the dreaded axe. Despite their early struggles, Abafana Bebathana (the Instep Boys) managed to turn things around in the second round of the season as they were able to step up the gear and collect crucial points. Wanderers are now in position 14 after 23 games, having lost 10, drawn seven and won six — collecting 25 points in the process.

In their second-round campaign, the local outfit played a 3-3 draw against the high-flying Casric FC on Saturday at Hammarsdale’s Mpumalanga Stadium. They 2-1 won against experienced Baroka FC at home on April 7, and on March 22 they went down 2-1 against Hungry Lions away from home. They also beat Milford FC 2-1 earlier this year, February 28, at Richards Bay.

On Saturday Wanderers travel to Mpumalanga Province’s KwaNyamazane Stadium to take on Kruger United at 3pm. “As I indicated from the start, I said our team was new or battling to settle in the NFD because it’s the toughest league in SA soccer,” he said.
