Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema is expected to return to the East London Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday for sentencing in a high-profile firearm case stemming from a 2018 incident. Malema was found guilty last year on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and discharging a firearm in a public place after firing a rifle during the EFF’s fifth anniversary celebrations at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane. The incident, which was captured on video, led to a case being opened by lobby group AfriForum.

During pre-sentencing proceedings earlier this year, the court heard mitigating evidence, including testimony from a social worker who highlighted Malema’s political influence and his role as a provider to his family and others. Despite this, the state has maintained its position that a 15-year sentence would be appropriate. Malema has indicated that he will challenge any custodial sentence, saying he is prepared to take the matter through all available legal avenues, including appeals to higher courts.

“I will appeal immediately,” Malema said previously, outlining plans to escalate the matter to the High Court and beyond if necessary. Heavy security was deployed around the court precinct on Wednesday morning, with roads cordoned off ahead of Malema’s appearance. Dozens of EFF supporters were expected to gather outside the court, while the party arranged for additional supporters to assemble at Jan Smuts Stadium, where large screens have been set up to broadcast proceedings. Malema is expected to address supporters following the court proceedings.
