Fans of Cantrel are in for a treat when the band hits the stage of the Schlesinger Theatre at Michaelhouse to perform a tribute to rock legends, Nirvana, at 7pm on Friday, March 13. Formed in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987 by lead singer and guitarist, Kurt Cobain, and bassist, Krist Novoselic, Nirvana was part of the Seattle grunge scene in the late 1980s. They released their first album, Bleach, on the independent record label Sub Pop in 1989, before signing with DGC Records, and getting global acclaim forSmells Like Teen Spirit, the first single from their landmark second album,Nevermind.
Following extensive touring and the 1992 compilation album,Incesticide, and the EP,Hormoaning, Nirvana released their third studio album, InUtero, in 1993. It topped both the American and British album charts, and was acclaimed by critics. Nirvana disbanded in April 1994, following Cobain’s suicide.
Cantrel was founded by Hilton resident, Neil Breytenbach, as a side project to his ‘day job’ as the keyboardist for legendary South African rock band, Prime Circle. He now shares the stage with his son, Jesse, a Michaelhouse old boy, whose gravelly voice is perfect for singing Nirvana’s iconic hits, includingSmells Like Teen SpiritandCome As You Are.
