More than 4,000 consumers in the district of Massingir, in Gaza province, have regained electricity from the national grid today, after more than 50 days of interruption caused by floods that destroyed part of the transmission line. The restoration of supply is the result of work carried out by Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), which mobilised technical teams to rebuild the infrastructure damaged by the force of the waters. According to the Director of the Chókwè Customer Service Area, Júlio Simango, about ten days of continuous work were required to restore electricity in the district.
To this end, technical teams installed more than 50 poles along a stretch of over six kilometres, in an area where the infrastructure had been swept away by the floods. “Among the districts affected by the floods, Massingir took the longest to be attended to due to the complexity of the damage recorded. However, we have now managed to restore normal electricity supply,” explained Simango.
Meanwhile, EDM urges consumers to use electricity responsibly and safely, taking into account that some household installations may have been damaged by the floods. Júlio Simango explained that technical teams remain on the ground to check the condition of connections and identify points that are still unsafe for the restoration of power. In these cases, he noted, supply may remain temporarily suspended until the necessary technical conditions are met. With the restoration of supply in Massingir, all 14 districts of Gaza province are now again connected to the national electricity grid.
