Mozambican President Daniel Chapo on Saturday inaugurated a new jetty on Inhaca Island, budgeted at 14 million US dollars. The jetty is expected to facilitate transport, boost tourism, and stimulate the local economy. The number of ferries between Inhaca and central Maputo is expected to rise from one to two a day.

According to Chapo, speaking during the inauguration, the jetty will benefit approximately 6,000 inhabitants of Inhaca who, for years, have faced mobility difficulties and high transport costs. “This jetty opens new perspectives for mobility and economic progress. This infrastructure will improve the population’s quality of life, with particular emphasis on the local road network”, said Chapo.

For his part, the MPDC Chairperson, Ozório Lucas, explained that the jetty has a total length of approximately 1,000 meters, including road and pedestrian access of about 353 meters. The structure was designed to support “the circulation of vehicles of up to five tonnes, with a maximum limit of three tonnes per axle, guaranteeing high standards of safety and durability”, he said. During the peak of construction, the project employed 165 Mozambican workers, also contributing to income generation and the transfer of technical expertise to the local workforce. With a lifespan of approximately 50 years, the jetty was designed taking into account various climatic and environmental scenarios, including the rise in sea level and increased rainfall intensity resulting from climate change.
