Scorchers eye friendly matches against overseas opponents

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) says it has plans to organise international friendly matches for the Scorchers against overseas sides such as Jordan and Sweden. The association’s president Fleetwood Haiya disclosed this in an interview on the side-lines of the FAM Awards at Comesa Hall in Blantyre Friday evening. Haiya said the friendlies are a result of bilateral relationship FAM is forging with other associations.

“Last year, we organised the Four Nations Tourney which involved Malawi, Zambia, Kenya and Zimbabwe. “This year, we are also participating in another Four Nations Tourney involving Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana. “This just shows that FAM has good relationship with other associations.

Very soon you will also see the Scorchers playing international friendly matches against oversea team such as Sweden and Jordan.” The international friendly matches are expected to be part of e the Scorchers preparations for the rescheduled Women’s Africa Cuyp of Nations tournament to be hosted by Morocco. The tournament, initially scheduled to take place from March 17 to April 3 will now be held from July 25 to August 16. But Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) in a statement, said the decision followed consultations with key partners, including Fifa, and other stakeholders.

CAF said the move was meant to ensure the successful hosting of the flagship women’s football tournament on the continent in light of “certain unforeseen circumstances”. Haiya said the rescheduling of the tournament would not have any effect on FAM. “Actually, in terms of resource mobilisation, it has given us ample time to look for funds for the team.

“Apart from that, playing the tournament in July will ensure that all our overseas players will be available since their league swill is on a break. “Meanwhile, back home the women’s’ national league will be in full swing which also ensure our players are fit.”
