Since then, the paper has deliberately re-embedded itself in the life of the city — present at major events, supportive of community initiatives, accessible and accountable. As reported on page one today, the title is also moving with the times. It is embracing a hybrid print and digital future, investing in technology, partnerships and new platforms to ensure that quality journalism remains sustainable.

Print remains important. Digital growth is essential. The two must work together.

It is an extraordinary privilege to be custodians of a 180-year-old institution. But privilege comes with responsibility. Journalism is a public good.

It informs voters, scrutinises power, tells community stories and holds institutions to account. Yet it cannot survive on principle alone. It depends on readers and advertisers who see its value and choose to support it. We need you as much as you need us.
