Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has said the transfer window will open on March 1 following the conclusion of the elite season. FAM operations director Gomezgani Zakazaka said the window will close around April 25. “Now that we are done with the last elite competition, which was the Castel Challenge Cup, first registration starts on March 1, meaning teams can now sign new players,” he said.
Behind the scenes, some teams already started the ground work by signing deals with free agents and agreeing transfer terms for prospective new players with fellow clubs. “Some teams might have agreed deals with fellow teams or players, but they only become legitimate when the process is done through the mandatory Mpira Connect registration,” said Zakazaka. Reigning flagship league champions Mighty Wanderers have taken on board Moyale Barracks striker Lameck Mithi, who has been offered a three year deal.
But the club’s chief executive officer Panganeni Ndovi said they are set to sign more players. “Of course, we are looking at bringing in more players to strengthen the squad. We hope to make reinforcements in a number of departments,” he said.

But ndovi could not be drawn to disclose their targets. Their arch-rivals FCB Nyasa Bullets also reached an agreement with fellow top-flight league aide Karonga United to sign goalkeeper Maclean Mwale early this month. But the People’s Team bid for Silver Strikers defender MacDonald Lameck and midfielder hit a snag after the Bankers rejected their offer.
On the other hand, regrouped Masters Security FC of Lilongwe, who have taken Bak City FC top-flight league slot, have been the busiest team so far. They have taken on board seven players, namely striker Chikaiko Batson from Civil Service United, left-back Precious Sambani formerly of Silver Strikers, forward Anthony Mfune of Karongs United, goalkeepers Nrightone Munthsli snd from Creck Sporting Club and Anthony Singini from Silver and defender Chisomo Mpachika also from Silver.
