Gauteng MEC for Education Matome Chiloane has expressed deep sadness following the tragic death of a 10-year-old Grade 5 learner from Reagile Primary School in Thembisa. The Thembisanreportsthat the incident occurred yesterday on the school premises, reportedly during second break. According to preliminary reports, a group of learners, including the deceased, were playing around the soccer goalposts when one of the posts allegedly fell onto the boy, causing severe injuries.
Paramedics were called to the school and arrived within approximately 20 minutes. Despite efforts to resuscitate him, the learner succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead at the scene. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Gauteng Department of Education has confirmed that it will conduct its own enquiry. The department’s Psycho-Social Support Unit has been dispatched to the school to provide counselling and support to learners, educators and the bereaved family. We wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to the learner’s family, fellow learners, educators and the entire school community,” said Chiloane.
