Family members and residents from the Howick West community celebrated outside the Howick Magistrate’s Court on Thursday after the man accused of shooting two men outside his home was denied bail. Ahmed Khan (56), who faces two counts of attempted murder, appeared briefly in court, where the magistrate ruled against granting him bail. The court said the investigating officer stated in his affidavit that releasing Khan would pose a serious risk to Khan’s safety and that of his family, as community members had threatened to take matters into their own hands.
In delivering the ruling, the magistrate said the investigating officer had also said that Khan’s family had raised concerns about their safety. Bail is no longer a right if there is a likelihood that, upon release, the accused’s life would be in danger. Outside the courtroom, Sindi Duma, the mother of the two young men who were allegedly shot by Khan, welcomed the decision.

A group of residents who gathered in large numbers to support the family also expressed satisfaction with the court’s ruling, saying they hoped justice would ultimately be served as the case continues.
