Members of the Labour and Civic Organisation (Laco) gathered outside a Save Hyper supermarket on Sunday morning, saying they were there to address complaints and grievances they claim have been raised. The disruptions resulted in the store being closed shortly before midday. Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) together with a large private security contingent were at the store as discussions.
Laco chairperson Moeketsi Mahasela, said they were waiting to meet the store owner later in the day. There are multiple grievances that we have heard. Some relate to salaries, working conditions and working hours.
“We are waiting to meet with the owners and management, who is expected to meet with us at 3pm today,” Mahasela said. The latest incident comes as other Pietermaritzburg businesses grapple with similar disruptions following protests by Laco. In a recent development, Daymed Private Hospital obtained an urgent interdict from the High Court in Pietermaritzburg restraining Laco members from entering its property, disrupting operations, or intimidating staff and patients.
