France-based Malawian women’s football stars Tabitha Chawinga and Rose Kabzere were on target for their respective clubs in the Coupe de France on Saturday. Tabitha, who has regained her scoring touch, netted twice and provided an assist as she inspired her team, Olympique Lyonnais, to a 6-0 thumping of Saint Etiene. The victory saw Lyon marching to the round of 16 in the French Women’s Cup.
According to lyonfoot.com, the Scorchers captain drew first blood in the 12th minute, capitalising on a pass that oozed class from Kadidiatou Diani. She then set up Wendie Renard for the third goal in the 73rd minute and claimed a brace and Lyon’s fourth in the 80th minute. In an interview yesterday, Tabitha said she was excited to play a significant role in her team’s triumph.
“Two goals and an assist, not bad. Credit to my teammates. We all fought and in the end it paid off.

I thank God Almighty for his endless blessings,” she said. On the other hand, Tabitha’s compatriot Kabzere also shone for her team Montpellier as they saw off AS Sarcelles 2-1 in the same competition. The Scorchers attacker broke the deadlock in the 14th minute before her teammate Lola Gstalter doubled the lead moments later, but Sarcelles scored their consolation goal deep in the second half.
