The D2296 between Karino and Tekwane South, which links to Kanyamazane, has been temporarily closed following the collapse of an old corrugated metal culvert today, January 12. The damage has rendered the road unsafe for all traffic. The City of Mbombela (CoM) has urged the public to remain vigilant as heavy rainfall continues across the region.
According to Bongani Dhlamini, spokesperson for the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport, motorists travelling between Kanyamazane and Mbombela are advised to use the N4 route until a temporary bypass is constructed and repairs to the affected section are completed. “Road users are urged to plan their journeys accordingly, adhere to temporary road signage and exercise caution while teams assess the damage and carry out the necessary repairs,” said Dhlamini. Meanwhile, CoM spokesperson Joseph Ngala advised residents, particularly those living in flood-line areas, to remain on high alert.
“If the rain persists, residents must evacuate to higher ground. Sandbags can also be used to create barrier walls at entrances or in areas where water is flowing towards properties,” said Ngala.
