Story by Wellington MakoneseWOMEN in Gokwe North are set to turn livestock into livelihoods as the ZANU PF Women’s League launches a National Piggery Scheme, positioning the project as a springboard for grassroots economic transformation. For women in Gokwe North, a piglet is no longer just livestock, it is money in the bank as each pig grows to fetch at least US$300.That is the promise Mrs Kumbirai Munatsi, and many others are banking on.“I see myself fetching around US$12 000 a year. Selling at US$400, I use piggery profits to pay school fees and reinvest. It is a project I am quite aware of, by December results will show,” she said.Over 100 households are set to benefit from this scheme along with the poultry pass-on scheme, with quick turnarounds that guarantee regular income.“This project is supposed to get to anyone at family level.
We are beginning with a child at 16 years. Piggery is a lucrative business that we are rolling out countrywide. We have over 1000 chicks as well today that we have distributed to women,” ZANU-PF Women’s League’s National Project Trainer, Cde Wekison Chadambuka stated.Presiding over the launch, ZANU PF Women’s League’s National Political Commissar, Cde Maybe Mbowa, said the projects are not handouts, but investments in women’s future.“Man do not want lazy wives.
When you see projects that are coming through the President, let us embrace them. This is the Vision 2030 he is speaking about. Use the opportunities you are getting, the water being availed, roads, the boosters, the pigs, and the road which is now linking to business.”The Women’s League is using Gokwe North as a template for grassroots economic growth countrywide. The programme builds on the league’s existing efforts to empower women through various initiatives, including providing essential tools and inputs like incubators, sewing machines and clothing materials and driver’s licence programmes to open up opportunities in the transport and logistics sector, among others.
